The Ayurvedic hair oiling ritual, explained
Champi is more than a massage. Here is exactly how to oil your hair — and why it works.

Why oiling works
Hair grows from a living follicle fed by blood flow. A slow, five-minute scalp massage increases circulation to that follicle while herb-infused oil forms a lipid layer that stops moisture loss along the strand. This is why traditional champi reduces both breakage and shedding — it treats the root and the shaft at the same time.
The right way to do it
Warm 8–10 ml of oil until it is just above body temperature. Part the hair in sections and apply directly to the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails. Massage in small circles for five minutes, then draw the remaining oil down the length of the hair. Leave it for at least one hour, ideally overnight.
How often
Twice a week is enough for most people. Oily scalps do well with once a week; very dry or chemically treated hair can handle three times. More is not better — over-oiling traps sebum and can itself trigger flaking.
Washing it out without stripping
Never shampoo dry hair to remove oil. Wet the hair fully first, then use a sulphate-free wash such as our Hair Veda Shampoo, working it into the scalp twice with lukewarm water. Sulphate-free cleansers remove the oil without pulling out the natural lipids you just fed.
What to expect
Reduced breakage is visible within two weeks. Reduced shedding takes four to six weeks, because a hair that has already entered the shedding phase will still fall. Visible new growth along the hairline typically appears between week eight and twelve of consistent oiling.
